ARTIST'S STATEMENT
As an artist, I am driven to express my own view of the world - to communicate my perspective of everyday scenes in a new and different way. My inspiration is the Impressionist School of painters, who saw beyond the surface in colors, textures, and composition to arrive at a different expression of reality, a unique way of looking at the world. My art is the struggle to express emotions, moods and feelings in concrete form; and my passion is the process of searching for the most elegant and beautiful form of expression. I enjoy this search in drawing, painting, and computer design, but I believe that my greatest strength is photography. By using the tools of infrared and high speed film, the techniques of high contrast black and white photography, and the skills of darkroom manipulation, I feel that I am most successful in transforming one image of reality into my vision of an equally true, but enhanced, image of the beauty and emotion that lie beneath the surface. Photography enables me to structure my own form, my own sense of line, design, and composition - even my own sense of time; to create my own vision of reality. The process is so compelling that I even love the failures. Improving my art is necessary to achieving success in my life, because my art is my life. Amy Brennan, 2002 |
